An exploration of IDEAs
inspired by nature's materials, form and diversity

“Don’t waste electricity, don’t waste paper, don’t waste food. Live the way you want to live but just don’t waste. Look after the natural world, and the animals in it, and the plants in it too. This is their planet as well as ours. Don’t waste them.”
- David Attenborough

Inventor

Designing and making is part of the process of developing an IDEA that may lead to design registrations and patent applications.
I use a combination of traditional making and drawing skills to advanced design CAD/CAM software. Sometimes both processes are needed to develop and idea and realise a project.
I work with manufacturers and suppliers under NDAs to ensure that intellectual property is protected for all parties and to develop an idea with specialists.

Designer

I design and make my own furniture, lighting, toys and products - anything that is needed for the home.

I am particularly fascinated in expressing different materials and their construction so that joints and wood grain for example are expressed to their full potential.

The process of making an object should be part of the design process so that the tooling marks leave an expression of the surface to tell a storey or are balanced against a fine finish.

Environmentalist

Integrated into landscapes with regenerative principles of water harvesting and use with biodiverse planted landscape for animals, insects and birds.
For a truly sustainable future we must have IDEAs for a regenerative de- sign future that puts more back than we taken from nature.
Incorporate organic and companion planting for food production and for wildlife including rainwater capture and re

Architect

Homes and cabins for urban, rural and wilderness landscapes which can be prefabricated offsite factory fabrication for quality and delivery anywhere.
Made with materials like wood which can be fully reused or recycled as part of the circular economy.
Are low energy with high insulation levels, and with renewable energy systems from solar and wind. With renewable energy systems these can be zero carbon or even energy positive.

My name is Matt Hoad and I am a chartered architect but I also design and make useful things for my family and friends to explore a lifelong held passion for the natural environment and the inspiration I get from it.

The projects that I have included in my website illustrate my journey through an evolving design process and is something that will hopefully continue as I focus on developing sketches into products rather than just projects.

The aim of this website is to share a way of thinking and working which has a sustainable ethos at its heart.

My hope is that the ‘how to’ part of the website will be continuously updated and may be of interest to those who want to develop their own IDEAs.

I also hope to add a selection of products will become available as they are
