An I D E A sets out with a purpose and often starts with a sketch which develops with a model which might be digital or made in materials.

Rapid digital prototyping and CAD / CAM can produce highly accurate components but hand tools and traditional techniques are simpler and sometime more authentic to a particular material. I like to use both - sometimes combined and overlaid before committing to using materials. Some project though go straight from the mind and develop through hands and tools - sometimes drawings cannot predict a solution as well as the influence of our skills and nature.

I always learn something from making an object as the materials provide feedback and tell you things that you don’t get in a digital environment.
